Work Package 2

This WP will be focused on the scientific assessment of heat exposure of children, through the development of models of microenvironment (fine-spatial and temporal esolution) through the use of multiple sources of meteorological data. Data sources will include ground level monitoring stations and earth observation data to establish temperature metrics for school, home and recreational zones. The WP will have to identify and validate sources of heat and climate data across all centres, and determine whether new data will need to be collected.

The WP will develop models necessary to describe microenvironment exposure to heat. Using methods previously employed by the research team in Ethiopia, the built environment assessment will be focused on determinants of heat island effects. Satellite based remote sensing has been used extensively to map both urban green spaces and urban heat islands, with land surface temperature from Landsat-8 images to create exposure maps of experienced heat stress at different residential locations.

This is to support the development of unique exposure characterization maps for included urban sites and individual risk characterization for study participants.

The WP will test these models appropriately to ensure validity across all centres and microenvironments. Finally the WP will provide the exposure metrics to WP3 for addressing exposure-related health outcomes
